Light Schooner Construction : Kick-up Rudder

Up

Rudder lamination

The rudder is 4 layers of 1/4" plywood, for a finished thickness of just under 1". I've modified the fixed rudder specified in the plans, to allow it to retract in shallow water. The cutouts in the center layers provide a cavity for lead to be inserted.

Rudder Weighting

I used #9 lead shot, mixed with slightly thickened epoxy, to add a little weight to the rudder so it won't pop up due to its own bouancy. It looks a lot like caviar.
